Have you experienced compulsory treatment and do you want to tell your story for a documentary on it?

I’m Nikki and I’m seeking interview participants for a short documentary about compulsory treatment and human rights. The media presents a lot of discussion about mental health from experts and rarely from the very people who have been under compulsory treatment. I believe these voices are missing from the conversation about mental health and more generally, human rights.

I am a filmmaker based in Melbourne, hailing from Auckland. I have spent over 10 years working in film and television and also with various community and not-for-profit sectors. I have also dedicated my personal filmmaking to stories around human rights and wellbeing. I made a short film about Mary O’Hagan and her experience of madness. This film went around the world to various film festivals, was published to Huffington Post and can be viewed here:

If you have experienced compulsory treatment and are interested in participating it would be great to hear from you. We can also discuss ways to keep your story anonymous if that is a concern to you.

My email address is nikkicastle@gmail.com or phone number +61414413882. Please include a brief (one-paragraph max) description of your experience with the mental health system and what you’d like to get out of being part of this film. And if possible, a brief description (age, job if you are employed, cultural background) of yourself. This will help me identify and relate a diverse group of people in the film.
