We start by brainstorming the definitions of discrimination, stigma, and self-stigma. The facilitator shares examples from their own experience. This provides a platform for participants to examine their self-stigma in small groups, then in pairs to create a visual and tactile description of self-stigma. The group considers a summary of research findings on where self-stigma comes from and explores the vicious cycle of self-stigma. We then introduce positive ‘circuit breakers’ to interrupt the cycle. Small groups then work on a fictional unfolding story of self-stigma, firstly from the point of view of the person herself, then from her friends and family.
